At Lead Mama Lead we believe that the modern workplace is not working for most families. Working parents – and especially working mothers – are rushed, overworked, time-poor and suffer guilt that they are doing a lousy job of parenting and a lousy job at work.
The workplace still operates under the assumption that there is someone at home to pick up the slack. Our version of a ideal worker still assumes that a good worker either has no outside obligations, or has a wife, homemaker or grandmother to attend to the childcare, nutrition, school pick ups, community fundraising and after-school activities. It is this idea of a model worker that needs to change.
The workplace operates as if it is 1960, not the 21st Century.
The workplace needs to evolve the meet the needs of working families to earn a decent meaningful living, whilst also meeting the unpaid needs of taking care of family. The workplace needs to make space for the career aspirations of working mothers AND the caring aspirations of fathers.
This change is not a small one. It is revolutionary.
We need a workplace revolution.
Lead Mama Lead is a community, a think-tank, a training organisation, a coaching service, and a movement. We are a social enterprise that exists to change this way that the workplace operates. We exist to spark the workplace revolution we so desperately need. We support, we inspire and we empower our fellow working mothers to dream big for their careers and their lives. We encourage one and other to create our own individual definition of success and to intentionally work towards creating the life that we want, not the life that fits within the constraints that we are given.
We believe that when it comes to work and family, every choice is a valid choice. We are not interested in engaging in mummy wars. We empower mothers to find their leadership path, whether that be whilst working full-time, working flexibly, returning to work after 15 years at home, or finding your sense of leadership in community involvement when you are a stay-at-home mother. We can all benefit from community that empowers us to live the life we define for ourselves, and to believe in our own capacity to make an impact on the world.
How do we define leadership?
Leadership is not only about management or senior roles at work. Leadership to us is your self-belief in your own capacity to make a change, or have an impact. Mama leaders strive to make a positive change in the world, whether that be through campaigning to change menu items in the school canteen, fundraising for a local domestic violence shelter, starting a women’s leadership network in your workplace, writing a book, starting a company or becoming the CEO of a massive global organisation.
We support mama leaders to find their self belief, find courage, and work intentionally to create the life they aspire to.
We refuse to accept that our role out in the world should be put on hold when we have young children.
We refuse to accept that working part-time or flexibly means we can’t do meaningful and challenging work.
We refuse to accept that a stay-at-home mother is not a leader.
We refuse to accept that motherhood means we should be taken less seriously.
So welcome, mama leaders. We hope you find strength, inspiration and community here.
