Do you constantly feel as though you have no time for yourself? Have you put your dreams on hold while your children are little? Do you sometimes wish you had more time to work towards the deepest dreams and ambitions?
Doing it all is a myth that had left working mothers feeling overwhelmed, drained and constantly feeling as though they are failing. It is impossible to do it all- to the standards we expect- and to keep our sanity. We don’t have the time or the energy to do it all. Nor should we.
So many of us working mothers have been conditioned by the subtle, and the not-so-subtle messaging we get from society. “A good mother always puts her family first.” “A good mother contributes to the family income.” “Women can have it all” “Women can do it all” “A good mother should not work too much” “A good mother is always happy and always copes well” “A flexible employee is not capable of challenging work” ……
With this sort of pressure it is no wonder that we feel that we have no time for ourselves. It’s no wonder that so many of us feel that there is not time to take care of our mental, emotional and intellectual needs, beyond the day-to-day of managing with family and perhaps a job that is mostly ok.
We don’t have time to do it all.
But we DO have time to do the things that are most important to us.
The way we use our time is the way we prioritise our time. By often we fall into the trap of using our time reactively, rather than proactively. Niggling tasks big and small have a way of making us think that these things are urgent and need to be addressed. The dirty kitchen call more loudly to us then the yoga mat. The email inbox seem more of a priority than taking a lunch break. The child that says “Mummy I don’t want Daddy to put me to sleep”, seems more pressing than the fitness class. The vacuuming seems far more important than sitting down with a good book.
When we use our time reactively, we are inclined to use it inefficiently. Housework and career work has a way of expanding to fit the available time. But there are ways that we can use our time differently. Not to neglect the necessary work of caring for our families or doing our job, but find ways to prioritise our own needs as well.
Commit to a life well-lived
A good life is achieved by living well in the day-to-day. Not by ticking tasks or achievements off a list. It is in the journey of this life, not in striving for certain milestones. The Design Your Perfect Week program supports you to commit to a life well lived, but committing to your dreams and making time for yourself.
This approach is not about detailed goal setting. The last thing mothers need is the pressure of another “To Do” list. There is a place for goal setting, but this approach teaches you how to find success in the journey, and make the time in and space to take care of your dreams, without adding additional pressure and overwhelm to your already busy life. This approach can work alongside more traditional goal setting processes, if you are that way inclined. But it is gentler and kinder, and had more focus on nourishing you in the here and now.
